Bad attitude

Sir: I have valid reasons to argue with anyone who opposes women’s role as the country’s executives. We can quote many examples from recent history wherein women not only led their respective countries out of crises but also stood firm on democratic norms and their commitment to prosperity of their people. However, there are other examples, where women failed to act wisely. That’s is what we witnessed the other day when Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Begum Hasina Wajid drove to the opposition leader Begum Khalida Zia’s office to offer her condolences over the untimely death of her beloved son. Once the prime minster was at the office gate — the drama started. She kept waiting for some time as the gate was locked. After a while, Hasina was advised that Khalida couldn’t meet her as she was resting. This is the height of arrogance; turning away someone who has come to you to share your grief, only because of political differences! Bangladesh lost the golden opportunity to get these two ladies to sit together and resolve the present political bickering, strikes, lawlessness and resulting economic instability. Let’s hope better sense would prevail and these two ladies will behave as leaders.
