Sir: One of my mentors and a noted educationist from Larkana, late Asadullah Pathan often used to quote an old adage, which reads as, “If you think knowledge is unimportant, try ignorance.”

Being illiterate in this world is not desirable for anyone and it is more damaging if a woman does not know how to read and write, because she would most likely transfer her ignorance of knowledge to her children. The land of Sindh province is enriched with abundant natural, human and cultural resources yet Sindhi people remain poor and do not have access to modern knowledge. Especially the illiteracy rate among women in Sindh is very high, but who cares in this country. If our rulers had promoted quality education in the country, especially in the rural areas, extremism, intolerance, social injustice, crimes, corruption and terrorism would not have become synonymous with our country in the comity of nations.
