CCP’s guidelines

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Please refer to the Competition Commission of Pakistan’s (CCP’s) recommendations to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and other public health-related governmental bodies regarding devising of guidelines to stop deceptive marketing practices (Daily Times, February 13, 2015). One hopes that a realistic timeframe for the development and implementation for the same was also included in the CCP’s order. The attention of CCP, PMDC and Pakistan Dental Association (PDA) is also drawn towards the dire need of similar guidelines for chemicals in products like skin whitening cream and dental amalgam. Both contain the third most hazardous substance, mercury, in quantities injurious to public health. The composition of the constituents (very particularly the mercury amount) in these products be disclosed to the users/patients, also clearly displayed on the labels and must not exceed the national quality standards (NQSs) permissible levels of chemicals in product. If not done so already, such NQSs are needed to be developed and implemented at the very earliest possible time to safeguard public health and to protect the environment.
