Rote learning

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Does our education system teach us to memorize the content of our course books rather than understanding it? Sadly, yes. It is a matter of remorse that in our government education boards, teachers only emphasise memorizing syllabus books in a given time without understanding and proper learning. Moreover, these are the same old course books that are being taught to students year after year without any further addition or improvement. The world is moving fast scientifically and technologically but we are still lagging behind with the same rusted learning course without any clear concepts and understanding. This disorganised education system is producing mere memorising robots and rote learners, who have no idea of practical or applied learning. They never get to read anything beyond their course books. They have hardly any knowledge about the world. This is the reason why our education board students fail to compete with the students of international education standards. The fault is not of any student but of the system that moulds them in such a manner that their mind is limited to their course books. Only a few extraordinary students make it possible to excel in learning. This system needs to be altered. Our country needs intellectuals, not robots. We can only progress when our youth will be smart and more efficient. For that the students, from the very inception, should be guided to read other informative books beyond their course because it will broaden their minds and make them more competent.
