Senate elections

Author: Daily Times

Sir: As reported in the national media, some politicians believe that the holding of Senate elections is no less that an auction, mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The politicians are conducting an exercise to choose half of the members of the Upper House. Most of the political parties have nominated their time-tested and loyal leaders and workers for the Senate. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led by its Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has nominated Engineer Gianchand Meghwar, the son of a primary school teacher hailing from the lowest echelons of the caste system called the Dalit community. The selection of Engineer Gianchand is considered as a political miracle. Instead of resorting to empty rhetoric about the rights of minorities like other political parties, the PPP has proved beyond any doubt that it is the only political party that truly cares for the rights of the underprivileged and oppressed communities. I would like to advise those followers of the ‘half-empty glass’ syndrome in the national media to highlight this historic decision by the PPP and its leadership, which sent out a crystal clear message across the country and the world about the party’s belief in equality of rights.
