Author: Daily Times

Sir: Tropical cyclone Pam, a powerful storm that hit the South Pacific island of Vanuatu a few days ago, caused widespread damage due to which the electricity is down, communication system is not working and shortage of food has commenced. According to the initial assessment aftermath in Vanuatu, 17 people lost their lives, 65,000 people became displaced and homeless whereas 166,000 people are in urgent need of life-saving assistance.
The United Nations office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs has appealed to the international community for urgent funding for Vanuatu. The UN has also urged for assistance to facilitate Vanuatu from potentially life threatening diseases, food insecurity and lack of shelter. This fund will help to rebuild the infrastructure of Vanuatu. Moreover, this devastating situation has affected many schools, putting the future of the children of Vanuatu at stake. Vanuatu is going through a tough time due to the tropical cyclone. The international community should play its role and support the UN in order to stabilise Vanuatu and help it rebuild its future.
