Iran’s deal

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The ratification of the Iranian nuclear framework by the US and European countries in Switzerland is a historical landmark in keeping Iran’s nuclear programme peaceful as well as lifting imposed sanctions against Iran, which have crippled the Iranian economy. Apparently, this is a positive step in nullifying the Israeli lobby against the agreement that it would strengthen Iran, putting the region’s security at risk. This optimistic deal may also be the beginning of improving the strained relationship of Iran with the US and the west amidst lots of uncertainties. One has to give credit to US Secretary of State John Kerry and all the participants who worked hard to the get the framework ratified amidst high stakes and it is hoped that the final comprehensive nuclear accord, by June 30, 2015, will meet the approval of all concerned parties.
Though the agreement will force Iran to reduce enrichment of uranium by two-thirds as well as its stockpile of low enriched uranium, in the long run it is a good settlement. Acquiring nuclear arsenals is not an absolute necessity in this day and age as no one would dare to use them. As far as Yemen is concerned, it is being speculated that the Saudis may get their nuclear arsenals from Pakistan and, if so, the use of nuclear weapons could initiate the total destruction of the entire region.
