Bystander apathy

Author: Daily Times

Sir: A few days back, my maid came home and very hysterically said that she had seen a kidnapping with her own eyes on her way to work. She narrated that a young girl of 16 years was standing on the road, when suddenly a rickshaw came and stopped in front of her. The driver stepped out and forcefully dragged the girl into his rickshaw. The girl was shouting her lungs out but all in vain. All the people standing around kept doing their work uninterrupted. This incident opened my eyes because it is these people who encourage such malicious acts and prompt these criminals. If even one of them had shown valour and had confronted that driver, the girl would have been saved but no one showed solicitude towards the innocent victim.
