Callous government

Sir: According to the latest forecast, another heatwave is going to hit Karachi and Sindh, where the people are still recovering from the previous heatwave that caused a large number of deaths last week. That heatwave not only highlighted the pathetic living conditions of the people in this mega city but also brought to the surface yet another example of apathetical behaviour of our government. There were more than 1,200 officially reported deaths all over Karachi, whereas a large number of deaths went unreported. During the period of heatwave in Karachi, there was an extreme shortage of not only electricity but water also.

The situation became more worrisome when there was no availability of ambulances to shift patients to hospitals. Due to the arrival of a large number of dead bodies, morgues were crowded and beds were not available in hospitals. Instead of grieving over the loss of their loved ones, the people were busy figuring out how to prevent the bodies from decaying on the roads. On the other hand, Sindh government functionaries did not care to visit any hospital or provide any kind of help to these ailing patients.
