PESHAWAR: Pakhtun nationalist leader, Central Senior Vice President of Awami National Party (ANP) and former Senator Haji Mohammad Adeel passed away due to his kidney failure. He was 72.
Haji Muhammad Adeel was suffering from kidney disease and he died at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Peshawar at 3:00 am Friday wee hours. He left a widow and son. He was currently serving as senior vice president of the party. He also served as the party’s central president for one and a half years. He served as a Senator from 2009-15.
He was born in 1944 in the family of anti-imperialists leader Hakeem Abdul Jalil alias Hakeem Sahib, who was actively involved in the non-violence movement, Khudai Khidmatgar against the British Empire in the subcontinent and was the president of All India National Congress Committee Peshawar chapter and a close colleague of Bacha Khan and Mahatama Gandhi and Member of Central working committee of Congress.
He was graduated from Edward College Peshawar and later got admission in fine arts in university of Peshawar. During his political career Haji Adeel served as finance minister and deputy speaker in provincial government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. He was Senator at the time when he represented Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the National Finance Commission of Pakistan.
Haji Adeel was elected thrice as member of provincial assembly in 1990, 1993 and 1997, and was Finance Minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial cabinet in 1993. He was Deputy Speaker for KP Assembly from 1997 to 1999, and senator from 2009 to 2015.
He remained in office as senator from 2009 to 2015. During his tenure in senate Haji Adeel was member of Standing Committee on Interior, Standing Committee on Defense and Defense Production Standing Committee on Textile Industry Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Functional Committee on Problems of Less Developed Areas.
He was ANP Parliamentary leader in Senate and remained Senior Vice President of ANP. He also remained Chairman Election Commission of ANP and Coordinator for ANP Lawyers. He was also member Central & Provincial Executive Committees of Awami National Party. He also remained member national executive committee, Pakistan India People Forum for Peace and Democracy. Member of National Steering Committee INSA (Imagine a New South Asia).
Being senior politician he was known for raising voice against corruption and always made an effort to remain connected to common man and resolve problems of his area. For him prevalence of peace was the most important factor for prosperity of the country. He always fought to strengthen democracy and never indulged himself in corrupt practices.
