Mohsin Naqvi visits Tehran amid stalled US-Iran negotiations

Published on: May 17, 2026 12:22 PM

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran on an important diplomatic visit as negotiations between the United States and Iran remain stalled over key regional and security issues. Diplomatic sources said the visit aimed to strengthen communication between regional stakeholders while encouraging renewed momentum in the sensitive negotiation process. Moreover, Pakistan is expected to explore possible avenues for reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran through dialogue and constructive engagement.

During the visit, Mohsin Naqvi is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings with senior Iranian officials to discuss regional stability, border cooperation and ongoing diplomatic developments. Iranian media suggested Pakistan could once again play an influential mediating role because of its balanced relations with both Iran and the United States. Furthermore, officials believe Islamabad may encourage both sides to adopt greater flexibility to prevent further deterioration in already fragile negotiations.

Pakistan has consistently supported diplomatic solutions in regional conflicts and maintained that dialogue remains the only effective path towards long-term peace and stability. Therefore, Islamabad’s engagement comes at a critical moment when mistrust between Tehran and Washington continues to delay progress on several sensitive issues. Analysts also believe Pakistan’s involvement could help reduce communication gaps and encourage both countries to reconsider rigid negotiating positions.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Pope Leo for condemning recent American attacks on Iran, describing the Pope’s remarks as fair, balanced and morally responsible. The Iranian president argued that the strikes violated international law and were carried out using misleading justifications during an already delicate diplomatic environment. Additionally, he stressed that such actions damaged trust and complicated ongoing international efforts aimed at restoring stability.

President Pezeshkian also criticised recent remarks by Donald Trump, calling them dangerous and reflective of an aggressive approach towards international affairs and diplomacy. He warned that policies pursued by the United States and Israel threatened not only Iran’s security but also broader international legal frameworks and regional peace. Consequently, Iranian leadership urged the global community to support dialogue and discourage actions that could further intensify tensions across the Middle East.
