Sir: Killing someone in cold blood is murder that merits a lengthy jail imprisonment and not forgiveness. According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), during the last two years the victims of “Honor Killing” were almost 1300. According to another report of HRCP, “Honor Killing” of girls and women in Pakistan has increased 15%. “Aurat Foundation” statistics mention that family members across the society killed around 1000 girls on an annual basis in the name of honor. Recently, another case was reported in Abbottabad in which a 16 years old girl called Ambreen was burnt alive because the orders given by the local “Jirga”. The situation has become alarming for which harsh and concrete steps are required to be taken by government. Although the police has arrested around 14 suspects, the Chief Minister of KPK Pervez Khattak is requested to take some brutal measures against these murderers to manifest the lesson to those who commit such heinous crimes. Additionally, PM Nawaz Sharif must amend the Criminal Act Law (2004), by removing the points that make such murders a private offence instead of a crime against state. The PM previously mentioned that the killers of women in the name of “honour” shall be duly punished. However, no such steps were taken and the PM must take appropriate measures for curbing the menace of “honour killings” in Pakistan SYED AMMAR ALI ZAIDI Karachi
