There are not many brands that are as recognizable as Casio and Seiko in the watch world. Almost every person has seen one of their watches at some point in life, especially during the 90s. By that point in time, these two brands had taken over the watch world for regular customers. Few people could afford the fancy timepieces that were being created by the Swiss. Seiko was an original competitor to those watches houses with their quartz watch the Astron. It was the first-ever quartz watch in the world and changed the technology that went into watches a lot. At the time it was such a threat to the Swiss houses that many of them came together under one umbrella to survive this new wave that was not lead by them. Incurring many losses that were the gain of Seiko. That era also had many brands making diving watches as scuba diving was one of the new sports that had become a hit. Having a watch that could withstand the pressure underwater was somewhat of a miracle of technology back then. The more high-end Seiko watches are in that line. One of Seiko’s top-selling models is the Seiko 5, an affordable option that is classy looking as well. It has a set of five features in it which gave it the numerical name. Seiko may have paved the way, but there is still no brand in the world that has produced a single model in the numbers that Casio has produced one of theirs. The Casio F-91W is one of the most sold models ever to exist, annual production is at 3 million units even today. Both these brands have multiple other successful lines as well. Seiko and Casio watches both have many different options, some are from a high-end price point but they have both made sure that there are options which more people can afford. Despite the prices, the affordable watches are still quality products that are reliable and can last one many years with relatively little care. For Seiko, this includes models in their Prospex, 5 Sport and Astron lines. Casio has Edifice which is their slightly more business faced watch line. The G-Shick series from them which are near indestructible, you could literally drive a car over them. Another sporty and outdoor line is the Pro Trek line which has features useful for people who like to hike or camp. The battery on these watches produced by Seiko and Casio can last many years and both of them have watches that can use light as a source of energy to charge up, those models last even longer. With features such as these and good quality materials, that include metal and plastics, these brands make sure that a watch is simple and effective in function. Out of these two, Casio has become a cultural marker of the retro times. The brand made a huge comeback with their designs from the 80s and 90s. These were watches that had calculator or TV remotes in them. In fact this latter model from Casio is usually sold out even today and hard to get one’s hands on. Retaining one’s place in a market where there have been so many changes. Even surviving the fact that today most people use their smartphone to look at the time says a lot about these brands. People have watches with them that they bought 30 years ago and these watches are still working. This was not something people expected from the initial age of digital watches. An attribute that speaks for the level of quality Seiko and Casio have produced.
