Sir: Women constitutes more than half of world’s population. They have been dealing with patriarchal systems since ages. But, thankfully, this is a changed world now, and there is no such field in which women are not participating on equal footing with male members of the society. They have shown the world what they are capable of. However, gender equality is a said to be a myth in a developing country like Pakistan. I, as women deal with male chauvinists every single day. Gender equality is a human right and for that matter, women should be entitled to live fearlessly with dignity and freedom. Equality between the sexes may also be considered as a precondition for advancing development and reducing poverty. Empowered women alone contribute well towards health and productivity of whole families and communities, and they can also improve prospects for the next generation. Despite all these advantages and evidence demonstrating the utility of women empowerment, gender equality remains an unfulfilled promise. The Punjab government has taken a lead in this matter, though. According to recently launched Alif Ailaan rankings, Punjab leads with 95.18 percent score regarding gender equality in educational access. It means that both men and women are given equal opportunity to get an education. Punjab also leads on the school infrastructure ranking as it provides the students with basic necessities. Six of the top ten districts are from Punjab that leads not just in terms of gender equality but also school infrastructure. This gives us some hope for future, but I would suggest that there are women in other provinces as well needing to be helped by the government. So the provincial governments of other provinces should also consider this an important issue because we deserve to be educated and live our lives freely as men do. WAJEEHA AHMAD Lahore
