According to our government policies the student to teacher ratio and teacher to admin staff is 2:1 the current lay off on administrative staff custodian staff and faculty has gone down this is a serious violation of the policy. UOL has ‘temporarily’ fired staff even though students are paying their fee, the university has also taken advantage of state bank loans on a very low mark up. Salaries reduced by 10-30% during the pandemic and now staff sent on leave without pay for 6 months. Letters have also been issued. Further, the University of Lahore, claiming itself the largest private sector university, applied for a loan from State bank and getting this loan from Bank Al Islami. They also deducted the salary of almost all the employees at the start of the pandemic situation The teachers worked more than 15 hours a day even in Ramzan by preparing lectures, delivering, and uploading. They even didn’t pay any internet or connectivity cost. Now, when the semester is going to complete, teachers are getting LWOP notifications instead of appreciation letters. They have sent even the lower cadre staff of security, transport, cafeteria, and janitorial staff to their home The staff in important offices like registrar, controller and accounts is also suffering equally. Most of the employees are on job to earn a livelihood and support their families. This particularly includes female staff who are either single parent or have to contribute to the household to keep their family’s life going. Some of them are not earning a living wage, and to reduce that even further would create a severe financial crisis. The provincial ministry of education must look into this matter on priority basis and keep a check and balance on educational institutes to avoid blatant violation of the government’s decision of not firing the staff in trying hour.
