LAHORE: A 13-days solo painting exhibition titled At the Land’s End, featuring artworks by abstract artist Sara Riaz Khan, kicked off at Rohtas 2 gallery on Monday.
A number of art lovers thronged to the gallery for the inauguration and admired her work.
As many as nine paintings were hung on the walls for visitors which were admired by people. Former foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri inaugurated the exhibition while Provincial Minister for Higher Education Begum Zakiya Shahnawaz was also present.
On the occasion, a large number of art lovers and art students were also present.
Sara said she felt closely connected to nature and was interested in ideas which brought people together. “In an increasingly divisive world, an appreciation of the natural world can help us know ourselves and relate to others. I had envisaged my creative journey as a stream with polished stepping stones. By tracing ripples and trailing pathways, by experimenting with ideas and responding to the world, I hope to fly to this unknown ‘Land’s End’ and in the process, find myself,” Sara said, while talking exclusively to Daily Times.
She said that colour excited her and she mainly used oil and gesso to stain and mark the canvas, building up texture and depth. “Using paint more thickly in places allows me to scratch back and reclaim earlier layers of colour. Initially I make conscious decisions about the composition and structure, however after a time, the painting takes over. In this series, there is a sense of movement through spaces which parallel both inner and outer worlds. I have enjoyed the challenges of working on a larger scale and want to continue exploring different ways of mark making, creating structure and expressing concepts. At present, I am not certain of what I will find at the Land’s End or when I will get there, but I know I am on the way,” she added.
The exhibition will continue until September 17.
