56 babies die at KTH for want of facilities

PESHAWAR: Due to the lack of facilities at Nursery ward of the Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) as many as 56 babies have died during the last one and a half years from January 2015 to July 2016.

An official at the Nursery Ward of the Hospital, on the condition of anonymity, said that around 467 babies were brought to the nursery ward in which around 355 were normal babies while 112 babies were premature.

He further said that in normal babies 327 were male while 140 were female babies, adding that in 112 premature babies 46 were male babies while 19 were female premature babies brought to the Khyber Teaching Hospital.

He further said that Nursery Unit of KTH lacks ventilators and other facilities most of the babies were at risk. He added that because of shortage of beds in the Nursery Unit most of the time around four to three patients were lying on the bed as it was threatening for the patients while most of the time diseases like measles were infected other babies as well.

He added that most of the premature babies were shifted from Khyber Agency and other Federal Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), adding that there is a dire need of children hospital in Jamrud Khyber Agency. He added that the provincial government claiming that they bring change in government hospitals, adding that still there is no specialized children hospital in Peshawar where all the facilities were available to the patients.
