Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg met Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai at Britain’s University of Oxford on Tuesday and posed for a photo together.
Yousafzai, widely known by her first name, Malala, is a student at the University of Oxford. The 22-year-old posted a photo on Instagram of herself and Thunberg sitting on a bench with their arms around each other, with a caption “Thank you, @gretathunberg” and a heart emoji.
It remains unknown what the pair discussed, but their meeting followed a talk Greta gave to students about ‘science, voting, the limits of protest, divestment, real zero v net zero, and much more’. The college’s master, Alan Rusbridger, posted a photo of the teenager on his own social media accounts, saying he was honoured to host her and grateful that she found time to give a talk.
Both young women shot to fame after standing up for major global issues. Greta, whose climate change campaigning has received global recognition is expected to address crowds at the Youth Strike 4 Climate Demonstration on Friday.
Malala also posted the photo on Twitter and commented: “She’s the only friend I’d skip school for.”
In 2014, Malala became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy of education. She became a global symbol of women’s resilience in the face of oppression. Thunberg has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 and 2020.
