War kills people – combatants, non-combatants, innocent or otherwise. The US-Iran conflict has brought this ugly reality to the world, especially to the families of 176 people who lost their lives after a missile struck their plane in Tehran. Iran has admitted it shot down the airliner “unintentionally” as the plane was mistaken as hostile. Though Iran is to accept blame for the loss of 176 lives, America also cannot be exonerated from the bloodbath for the bloody turmoil set in after the US president decided to kill Iranian military commander General Qassem Soleimani. A US drone strike took him out at the Baghdad airport making the region vulnerable to a bloody clash. A couple of days later, Iran struck back, and as an act of avenge, it rained a barrage of missiles on US military bases in Iraq. Hours after the strikes, the US president was boasting that no American life was lost. The shooting down of the Ukrainiran airliner initially remained shrouded in mystery. In the age of satellite images, nothing can be hidden forever. Tehran, however, wasted a day to admit that the plane was brought down from the missile launched ‘mistakenly’, killing people on board from seven countries. The top Iranian leadership has offered condolences and apologies over the crash and deaths, promising transparent investigations into the tragedy. Canada, that suffered most deaths in the crash, has demanded compensation as well action against Iran. US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, however, is seeing another opportunity in the crash to pressure the beleaguered Iranian leadership into accepting the US offer to start negotiations on its nuclear program. Before pointing fingers at Tehran, first of all, Washington should question itself if it has an indirect role in the loss of precious lives. The whole world knows that the Iranian air defence system was on guard after the US killed its commander. Iran’s calculated response, which did not harm any US personnel, also shows that it did not want to initiate an all-out war. In the US-initiated military turmoil, innocent passengers became the victims of the ‘unintentional mistake’. The plane crash leaves several question about Iranian capability to handle sophisticated warfare. Moreover, the crisis offers a valuable lesson to the whole world: war is blind in killing the people. *
