Renowned ENT specialist shot at, injured in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Renowned Ear Nose Throat (ENT) specialist of Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) Professor Dr Asmattullah Khan seriously injured outside his house when unknown armed persons opened fire on him in the early hours of Thursday.

Police said that Dr Asmatullah was coming for duty to Hayatabad Medical complex in his car, when he was targeted outside his house by unknown assailants. He sustained five bullets on chest region and managed to drive his car to reach HMC. He was rushed to intensive care unit where he was operated upon.

An official of HMC said that his condition is still critical and next 48 hours are extremely critical for his health.

Dr Asmatullah is serving as a professor at ENT department of HMC. He has also rendered services in district headquarter hospital, Lower Dir. Meanwhile, Provincial Doctors Association Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Young Doctors Association condemned the attack on the attack on senior doctor and demanded arrest of the culprits within 24 hours.

The doctors community at HMC Peshawar stage protest including paramedical staff and nurses and suspended all the services of emergency and out-door patients department at HMC, demanded the provincial government to arrest the culprits within 24 hours otherwise they will protest the entire hospital of the province tomorrow.

Meanwhile action committees of doctors send a letter to Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chief Minister, and Inspector General of Police (IGP) KP and demanded to insure the security of doctors in the province.

They threatened the provincial government that if the culprits were not arrested in 24 hours then they will protest from the entire hospital of the province.

They said that doctors community in KP were on safe corner of the terrorist and because of that most of the doctors community including senior professors were migrated to foreign countries or then to Lahore and Islamabad.

“If doctors were not safe at Hayatabad near HMC hospital then what will be the situation of other doctors living in remote areas of the province”, they informed.

They demanded the provincial government to recruit more security personal near Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar and take strict action for the better security arrangement.

They inform that after the incident doctors community were shock and feeling unsecure , adding and demanding the provincial government to take steps and conduct an inquiry against those police official who were on duty when the incident was happened.

It merits mentioning here that on September 11, armed men on a motorcycle shot dead a senior member of the polio eradication campaign in Peshawar.
