A group show called ‘Pargat’, on Guru Nanak’s 550th birthday was organised by the College of Art & Design, University of Punjab, Lahore and Lahore Arts Council on Monday at Alhamra Art Centre. The event was graciously inaugurated by the Governor of Punjab Ch. Sarwar, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University Prof. Dr Niaz Ahmad and Principal College of Art & Design Prof. Dr. Shahida Manzoor along with Executive Director Lahore Arts Council Ather Ali Khan. A group of Sikh delegates, faculty members, students and a good number of art enthusiasts came to see the show held to celebrate 550′ birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. The art exhibition features the work of 35 young artists in which students expressed their ideas to celebrate the religious, social and cultural significance of Sikh community through 35 artworks and group performance. Students of College of Art and Design of PU have created artworks in myriad of mediums to celebrate the historical, culture and religious significance of the Sikh community. On the occasion, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar greatly appreciated the work of young artists and said that Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Peace Be Upon Him) was celebrated with religious zeal and zest across the country. Sarwar further said that, according to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the followers of all religions in Pakistan have complete freedom, so that followers of all religions can celebrate their festivals in the light of religious beliefs. Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University Prof. Dr Niaz Ahmad expressed his views saying, interfaith harmony is essential for promoting peace in the society. He stated that this art exhibition is an honorary show on 550 birthday of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji which is being commemorated throughout the world this year. Prof. Dr. Shahida Manzoor said that, art is a tool that not only connects the past with the present but also build bridges among various ethnicities, hence celebrates diversity. On the occasion, Executive Director Lahore Arts Council Ather Ali Khan said that, the artworks are a reflection of the teachings and ideas of Baba Guru Nanak. He further said that Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji teaches truth, equality, love and the adoption of high social values. Artworks of students have highlighted the religious, social and cultural traditions of the Sikh community in their work which is remarkable, he added.
