Sir: Salahuldin Ayubi accused of breaking ATM Machines, died in police custody. There is law of land to deal with the committers of crime after following due process. But here in Pakistan most of denizens deem themselves judge and jury. Police with rare exception are notorious for beating to death accused on plethora of reason, failing to get their palms greased, considering emotionally that by beating the accused they are doing service to the society by getting rid of the criminal. The ruthless and brutal justices of public hanging and beheading of criminals have not reduced crime rates in those countries with such laws. And inhuman behaviour with under-trail or convicted prisoners in Pakistan has not resulted in reducing of crime. Crime can only be reduced by following due investigation judicial process. The best facilities and reforming opportunities provided to convicted criminals have converted the habitual criminal into useful and responsible citizens and amazingly reduced the crime rate in civilized societies. The corporal punishment free school environment and zero violence against women have enabled the developed societies to progress in leaps and bounds. We need to follow this nonviolent path which will guarantee sustainable peace and prosperity from family and at national level. GULSHER PANHWER Johi
