Sir: India abrogated Article 370 of its constitution stripping Kashmir of its autonomy last month. It is ironic that a country that attained freedom from British colonialism little over half a century ago is today itself colonizing autonomous territories using brutal force. India has been criticized by international rights’ organizations for disproportionate use of force in Kashmir against stone-pelting unarmed civilians, including use of deadly pellet guns which have not only resulted in massive injuries but have actually caused permanent blindness to thousands of youth. This is in addition to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings and privacy violation in the form of illegal and unannounced raids at private residences. Presently there is a strict curfew all across Kashmir, phones/internet are disconnected, elected representatives are either in detention or under house arrest, public assembly is banned, and the area is off limits for journalists and media. It is shocking that EU, UN, OIC and the self-proclaimed international policeman ie the USA have not issued any statement of condemnation against this total disregard for international conventions and modern day imperialism. It is hoped that sense will prevail in the global power echelons and the international community will do the needful to end the suffering of the persecuted Kashmiris. MIRZA M ALI HOSSAIN Karachi
