KHYBER AGENCY: An attempt of smuggling of cell phone batteries from Afghanistan to Pakistan was foiled by the customs officials here at Torkham border on Friday. The customs superintendent at Torkham center Naeem Khan told Daily Times that the on duty customs officials at the border stopped a 22-wheeler vehicle, bearing registration number KBL-7697, entering Pakistan from the Afghan for routine checking. During search foreign made recovery of 9,900 mobile phone batteries concealed in different secret cavities of the vehicle. The official told that the illegal commodities were sealed and the truck was taken into legal custody, before it was shifted to the customs house for investigations from the arrested driver and his helpers. It is important to mention that last week, the Torkham custom center halted smuggling of huge quantity of fertilizer from Pakistan into Afghanistan. Transporters from both sides regularly attempt to smuggle goods that they can get at cheaper prices in one country and sell at higher prices in the other country where it’s in demand. However, advances checking equipment, including scanners and extensive checking of vehicles coupled with reliable information from informers are helping the customs personnel on the border checkpoint to foil such attempts most of the times.
