The people of the Kashmir valley have entered into the 22nd day of their lockdown braving the ruthless crackdown, curfew, bullets and pellets, blood and death, loss of limbs and vision, thirst, hunger and disease amidst the pathetic silence of the world leaders championing, day in and day out, liberalism, democracy and human rights. They are fighting their war all alone to stem the Hindutva – the majoritarian Nazism – without outside help taking a page from the chronicles of freedom fighters in Algeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia and leafing through the struggle of the nationalists of the Sub-continent for freedom from the British colonialists. They seem fully braced for a long haul of bloody battles to defeat the majoritarian fascism. The so called free media of India has been gagged by Hindu nationalist bias. The dreadful plight of Kashmiris is finding more space in International media. The revocation of the special status of their state has done a great service to the people of the valley uniting their leaders of all hue on the single agenda of freedom from the Hindu fascism. No one of them would commit the blunder of the revered Shaikh Abdullah who was duped by the sweet talk of his friend, Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru reneged from his promises and pledges and incarcerated him after achieving his objective of bringing the state under the thumb of the Union of India. The hapless Kashmiris have since been faced with majoritarian snobbery and persecution. What strikes as certain – is the Kashmiris would not let their struggle for freedom die a slow and silent death. While possibly ebbing for some time, it will rise like a phoenix again. The stamina of the Palestinian freedom fighters has defied all rational interpretations. It has continuously kept the mighty Israeli security forces on tenterhooks for the last three decades. They have not been daunted by killing and maiming. The Kashmiris have demonstrated the same unprecedented spirit since 1989 defying the ironclad security cordons, deaths, rapes, indignities brazenly over indulged in by over 600,000 Indian troops. The world is watching with berated breath whether the current lockdown with its concomitant woe and miseries would break their resolve or give a further fillip to their determination to defy the dark forces of fascism. What the human history bears witness to – is that the spirit of freedom ignited in a nation remains aglow until it reaches its lofty destination. There has been no exception in the chronicles of freedom struggles. The speech of the Prime Minister intending to address the UN General Assembly, should be skillfully drafted – free from hyperbole, emotive and intemperate jargon – and entirely focused on highlighting the plight of the Kashmiris and the need for solution of this festering issue Pakistan owes a great deal of moral obligation to the Kashmiri people in their upright struggle for freedom. It has been unequivocally supporting their indigenous movement for liberation morally, politically and diplomatically. Let us admit there have been grave lapses on our part in projecting the cause of Kashmir in proper perspective before the world. The problem of Kashmir was more than a bilateral dispute between India and Pakistan. It was the question of the self-determination of over 15 million people. We wasted long years after the adoption of the resolutions by the UN Security Council for plebiscite in Kashmir failing to keep the major powers focused on the problem. However, there is no use of crying over the spilt milk. The fascist move of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again brought the Kashmir issue into world focus. The UNSC’s consultative session was a diplomatic achievement. The session of the UN General Assembly is round the corner to be mostly attended by member countries at the head of state or the head of government levels. This session comes at an opportune occasion to put the cause of the Kashmiri people in right perspective and expose the blatant human right violations in the valley by the occupying Indian forces over-indulging in killing, maiming, blinding and rape. These crimes have been properly documented by the UN Human Rights Commissions and Amnesty International. The speech of the Prime Minister intending to address the UN General Assembly, should be skillfully drafted – free from hyperbole, emotive and intemperate jargon – and entirely focused on highlighting the plight of the Kashmiris and the need for solution of this festering issue. Making maximal use of his stay, he should have one-on-one meetings with his counterparts from all the important countries. The purpose of the meetings would not be to extract favourable statements but to place the Kashmir issue in proper perspective. Because of the scarcity of time with the world leaders, the Foreign Minister should camp in the UN premises from now to avoid bureaucratic inertia and the lack of urgency in arranging the meetings of the Prime Minister on the sidelines of the session. The Prime Minister also should address the international media. Being articulate and eloquent, he will surely have a successful interaction with the media. We also may think of buying space and time in the international print and electronic media for special supplements and projection. The Kashmiri diaspora abroad particularly in the United Kingdom and the USA could be mobilized to finance the media blitzkrieg. The Prime Minister should include Kashmiris leaders of both gender from AJK and abroad in his entourage for lobbying with the delegates of Human rights Commissions during the UN General Assembly Session and briefing US Congressmen and Senators in Washington DC. The young and energetic British Parliamentarians of Kashmiri descent will be very effective in exposing the crimes being blatantly committed in the valley. The UN General Assembly Session taking place on the heels of the lockdown imposed in the valley by the fascist Modi regime has provided us the proverbial hammer to strike the hot iron. We should not let this opportunity slip unavailed of. The Prime Minister’s address to the UN General Assembly, bilateral meetings helped by the media projection and Kashmiri leaders’ interaction with the US Congressmen and Senators will not only advance the cause of the struggle of the Kashmiri people for freedom but help swing the international opinion too.
