Nearly a year ago the government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf came into power. Imran Khan’s 22-year long struggle to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan was realized when his party won the 2018 general elections. Pakistan was divided between two kinds of followers soon after these elections. First, those who thought PTI was to amend everything in Pakistan that was wrong and second, those who thought PTI was living in an illusion. Imran Khan’s robust personality and his do-it attitude embarked Pakistan in a new era, towards a “New Pakistan.” Although we cannot truly comprehend the performance of any government based on one year time period, we can observe what has been done and what has yet to be accomplished. Imran Khan and his party took the reins of the country at a time when state institutions were in doldrums and facing a possible collapse. Each sector including education, health and trade was facing problems of their own. It will take time for the government to at least understand these issues and problems each sector is facing and what are its causes and effect. It will take time, however, for the government to take corrective measures in this regard. Imran Khan, while giving his first orders as the Prime Minister, was to ask the concerned authorities to take action against the former leaders of Pakistan namely Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari. Second, the PTI government asked every Pakistani to become a tax filer. Despite Imran Khan and his government trying to carve out a new Pakistan from the one they got at the time of their coming into office, there seems to be a lot of grey areas regarding their mission. It is a fact that governments do run on sales tax and sales revenue and Imran Khan’s cabinet is doing a commendable job. The appointment of Syed Mohammad Shabbar Zaidi as the Chairman of Federal Board of Revenue speaks volumes of the governments’ ambitions to streamline the revenue generation process and identify and control all loopholes in this system preventing the country from utilizing sales revenues at its maximum. Imran Khan also went after the former leaders of Pakistan in an attempt to retrieve the money they had laundered for their interests. While his actions will present the country with a new wave of commitment, focusing only on revenue generation will not bode well with the country’s state of affairs. There must be a strategy for uplifting the very foundations of the country. This can be done by adding new life to the sectors of Pakistan including education, health, law, agriculture, technology, services, infrastructure, planning and development, tourism among others While his actions will present the country with a new wave of commitment, focusing only on revenue generation will not bode well with the country’s state of affairs. There must be a strategy for uplifting the very foundations of the country. This can be done by adding new life to the sectors of Pakistan including education, health, law, agriculture, technology, services, infrastructure, planning and development, tourism among others. Each sector must be streamlined by appointing an experienced professional to govern the sector along with a team of qualified specialists who can breathe in a new life in the sector they are working for. Imran Khan, however, must develop a team for each sector responsible to identify key problems and shortcomings, evaluate the present scenario and delineate possible solutions. This team will also allocate the budget for each sector, how to utilize it and carve out a plan to implement the policies and procedures to solve the problems before evaluating the outcomes. The government must diligently work to enhance the functions of each sector and must give special emphasis on the causes of failure for each sector. The importance must be given to education, health, economy and law while the restructuring of the other sectors must be carried out simultaneously. There must be a sense of revival and urgency in action to bring a positive change in all major sectors of Pakistan. Imran Khan’s ambitions to collect billions of Rupees in sales revenue will not take Pakistan towards success. He must plan and implement a strategy to not only restructure all sectors but also to hire employees on merit who can help the government in controlling and eventually eliminating corruption while consuming all available human and capital resources, assets and opportunities to generate maximize output. Yes, sales tax are used to run the government, but a country prospers when its citizens are educated, have access to medical facilities, live with a peace-of-mind because and work in a country where the economy is prospering, inflation is in control and the quality of life is showing an ascending trend.
