RAWALPINDI: The project for expanding Adiala Jail has not gone from theory to practice even after 12 years of its approval, due to lack of interest by the provincial government, the police department and the district administration and the jail’s management. According to sources 800 acres of land was acquired in 2004 in front of Adiala Jail for the construction of a jail for female and child inmates of this prison. The payment of the cost of land was made and the land was transferred in the name of the district administration. But the administration has not taken over possession of this land. Over 6000 prisoners including females and children are forced to lead a miserable life for want of space in Adiala Jail. The Central Jail was constructed in 1984 with a capacity for 2000 prisoners. Presently over 6000 prisoners are kept in this prison. Only two barracks are allocated for female inmates in this jail. Sources said that funds had also been released for the construction of a jail for females and children on the land acquired for the extension of this jail. But the amount was taken out from this fund and two barracks were constructed and the matter was dumped. Talking to Daily Times, the DIG Jails, Shahid Saleem Beg, said that earlier the site was identified in the rear of Adiala Jail but due to political influence of the land lords the project was shifted from the rear to the opposite side of the jail. First a payment of Rs 40 or 50 million was made on this count. More information sheds light that a further payment of Rs 50 million was also made. The Punjab government had issued a notification of Sector 4. Later this project was wrapped up due to political influence. Now this project is being launched in Chontra in the name of district jail Rawalpindi. About 700 kanals of land has been identified for this purpose. The provincial government has approved the project as well. Under this project a separate jail will be constructed for female and children here in the name of Chontra district jail Rawalpindi. About the lack of capacity for accommodating prisoners he said as there was no jail in the federal capital therefore, its burden had also been shifted to Adiala Jail.
