Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Heatwave Early Warning Centre, on Saturday, announced some relief for the public as it downgraded the heatwave alert to ” mild heatwave.” However, hot and humid weather was said to likely prevail. A notification by the Met Office relayed that the maximum temperature might range between 38 ºC and 40 ºC from May 25 to May 26. The temperature would further drop between 37ºC and 39ºC on May 27, PMD added. Earlier on Thursday, the weather department had issued a warning that the heatwave would likely grip Karachi city and surrounding areas from May 25 to 27. It had also cautioned citizens of temperatures soaring between 39 ºC and 41ºC in the daytime during this period. According to the weather forecast, the wind would mostly blow from southwest to west direction during the daytime. Earlier, the Heatwave Early Warning Centre had claimed that the weather would remain hot and humid while the wind direction would change from west and southwest to west and northwest. The met office also advised the authorities and all stakeholders to take the necessary precautions. The last heatwave continued from May 1 to May 3 wherein the maximum temperature soared up to 42 ºC in Karachi. The extreme weather warning was followed by a declaration of emergency in hospitals and the establishment of heatstroke centres in the city. The low pressure in the Arabian Sea hampered routine sea breeze to the city during the spell of a heat wave while hot and dry winds were expected to blow from north and northwest, the heat wave warning centre maintained.
