As many as six out of 14 people drowned in a capsized boat in River Indus near Unarpur, 50 kilometres from Sehwan city, were retrieved safely on Sunday According to Jamshoro Deputy Commissioner Captain ® Fareed Uddin Mustafa, a total of 14 people, including women and children, had drowned on their way to their native village Dara Machhi from Matyari district a day earlier. He said that the boat had overturned due to strong winds. The rescue teams were said to face trouble while searching for bodies in darkness yet they continued their operation. Talking with Daily Times on Sunday, Jamshoro Deputy Commissioner said that six people were found alive while three dead bodies were fished out by local divers. The parties were still searching for remaining five dead bodies, he added. Those who drowned included Qaima Punhoon Machhi (35); Gul Zadi Meer Hassan Machhi (30); Shahzadi Sikandar Machhi (25); Asat Kamal Machhi (50); Popri Khan Mohammad Machhi (35); Imran Khan Mohammad Machhi (12 months); Abdul Wahab Sono Machhi (4) and Sikandar Machhi (2). DC Jamshoro claimed that the dead body of 12-months-old Imran was fished out on Sunday while two dead bodies (Mast Asat and Mast Popri) were retrieved the night earlier. He said that officials of district administration and local police were present along with the embankment of river Indus to search the dead bodies. The DC added that four boats were participating in the rescue operation. Jamshoro Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tauqir Mohammad Naeem said that the staff of Unarpur, Budhapur and Manjhand police stations was also searching for the five remaining villagers. He added that all victims belonged to Machhi community of Village Dara Machhi of Jamshoro district. Jamshoro-I Additional Deputy Commissioner Shaukat Ali Ujan and Jamoshoro-II Additional Deputy Commissioner Sohail Arain were leading rescue operation and had established their camps at Unarpur at River Indus. According to Shaukat Ali Ujan, there was no way for any vehicle to reach the location due to the surrounding forest. Rescue teams and volunteers from nearby areas had reached the spot treading through Indus river. Rescue officials shifted the bodies to the hospital for identification and medico-legal requirements Divers of the Pakistan Navy were also said to have been called in for the speedy rescue operation. Meanwhile, the police could not ascertain the cause of the incident. Last November, at least four people drowned to death while 15 were rescued when a boat capsized in Indus river near Saggiyoon in Khairpur district. According to sources, a woman and three children were killed when a boat carrying nearly 20 villagers had turned in Indus river.
