On Wednesday, Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib made a historic first by becoming the first Muslim woman to preside over the floor of the US House of Representatives. But is it really Tlaib’s historic first? For she is famous being the first Palestinian American woman to join Congress. Along with Ilhan Omar, she is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. Said her post, “Not bad for a girl from Detroit that didn’t speak English when I started school & first in my family to graduate high school & college.” She added, “This was a proud moment & it sank in just a little more that I am serving in Congress.” Interesting to note is that Tlaib’s monumental achievement occurred just days after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez presided for the first time on Friday, becoming the youngest woman ever to do so. Women are shaping the future, big time!
