‘Dhadak’ is a Bollywood film and a remake of Marathi film ‘Sairat’ which was a commercial success, earning more than Rs 100 crore. The 138-minute film was released on July 20, 2018 globally. ‘Dhadak’ is produced by Karan Johar and Hiroo Johar and written as well as directed by Shashank Khaitan. The music of the film was composed by Ajay-Atul and the lyrics were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The daughter of famous actress Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor was introduced through this Dharma Productions film but it was the second film of her co-star Ishaan Khattar as he worked in a film before, titled ‘Beyond the Clouds’. The film focuses on two major issues of society, the first one is honour killing and the second one is caste-based discrimination. Honour killing is a common issue in some societies where men or women are killed in the name of honour and it happens in the cases when a couple goes against their parents and get married or in most cases, run away from their homes. The caste discrimination is indeed the same as honour killing where the girls or boys of upper class families get in relationships with the girls or boys of lower or middle class families. This discrimination also results in murders and killings which happened in this film too. The story of the film revolves around the lives of two persons. Madhukar Bhagla is a young college student but he belongs to a middle class family. On the other hand, Parthavi Singh belongs to an upper class political family and studies in the same college as Madhukar Bhagla does. Bhagla likes Parthavi Singh and tries to impress her but the father of Bhagla asks him to stay away from Singh since she is from a powerful and rich family. Bhagla forgets the words of his father and gets in a relationship with Singh. Singh’s father catches Bhagla along with his friends but does not take any action before the results of elections. After the elections, Bhagla gets arrested and Singh begs her father to leave him alone otherwise she’ll kill herself. Singh and Bhagla elope and move to Kolkata, where Bhagla starts working in a restaurant and Singh finds a job at a call centre. They get married and have a son named Aditya. The story ends with Singh’s brother killing both her husband and her son. The film proved to be a commercial success at the box office but received negative reviews from the critics who called it a poor remake of the original film. Janhvi Kapoor became successful in winning the hearts of her fans by her performance in her first film and Ishaan Khatter was admired a lot for his acting.
