Iran is one of the victims of terrorism as well as a leading state in the fight against terrorism and extremism, according to a statement issued by the Iranian Embassy in Islamabad. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has so far supported many defenseless people in the region and has sacrificed many lives to fight terrorism and extremism. It is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism and extremism in the diplomatic and military fields,” the statement, issued in response to an opinion piece titled ‘Fairness and Justice’ authored by Foqia Sadiq Khan published in Daily Times on April 23, stated. “Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had moved a resolution titled ‘WAVE: World Against Violence and Extremism’ on fight against terrorism and extremism in the UN General Assembly on February 20, 2014. This resolution played an important role in explaining the concept of terrorism and extremism and international criminalisation of this phenomenon, besides urging the need for a global confrontation of the menace,” the statement said. “Unlike the United States and its western and regional allies who pretend to fight terrorism, Iran has lost many lives and paid heavily in the fight against terrorists in the recent decades. It has played a leading and determining role in eradicating some terrorist groups like ISIS in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria,” the statement maintained. “Instead of false allegations against the states which are fighting terrorism, it’s time to publicise the names of the governments which have directly created Takfiri and barbaric groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda,” it suggested. “Iran is in no way a party to the Yemen war. The main responsibility of Yemen’s disaster lies with the attacking party, the coalition led by Saudi Arabia,” the statement read. “Placing the responsibility for the consequences of this war on Iran is a false, unjustifiable and hostile act,” it concluded.
