The alleged rape and murder of a 26-year-old female patient in a hospital in Korangi have caused an uproar from all quarters. A complete shutter-down was also observed, on Tuesday, in Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri and adjoining areas of Karachi in this regard. A resident of Ibrahim Hyderi, Asmat Khanejo, had gone to the Sindh Government Hospital, Korangi, complaining of a toothache last week. However, she lost her life there, after being administrated a suspicious injection. According to her family, she was sexually assaulted by the hospital staff before being killed. On Tuesday, residents of Ibrahim Hyderi and civil society organisations took to the streets to protest and demand strict action against the suspects involved. Shops and markets in the area were closed while traffic remained thin. The protest was led by Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Chairperson Mohammad Ali Shah. He noted, “Government should probe into the incident and exemplary punishment should be given to those found guilty in the incident.” The protesters remembered Asmat as a bright young woman and an emerging community leader. She was also said to be financially supporting her family. One of the women activists, Qurat Mirza, condemned the incident and remarked, “You cannot imagine the situation her family has been facing.” “The woman had gone to the hospital only because she had a toothache but the family received her body,” she added. The activist alleged, “Asmat was drugged and heinously raped,” while making a note, “Her post-mortem has also proved that it is not a case of medical negligence but murder.” “Her post-mortem has also shown evidence of rape,” she concluded.
