Islamabad High Court (IHC), on Thursday, summoned three Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers on petitions seeking their disqualification from National Assembly. Justice Aamir Farooq directed Kanwal Shauzab, Malaika Bukhari and Tashfeen Safdar to submit their comments before the court to defend their disqualification on alleged violations of Article 26 and 63 of the country’s Constitution. The hearing was adjourned for a week. The court was requested to suspend the membership of the lawmakers until it gives verdict on their disqualification. They stated that Bukhari should be declared ineligible for membership of Parliament for possession of dual nationality whereas Safdar should also be disqualified for concealing information about her dual nationality in her nomination papers. Last October, the Supreme Court (SC) had disqualified two Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s sister, Sadia Abbasi, and Haroon Akhtar Khan, from Senate membership over dual nationality. Heading a seven-member bench of the apex court, the then chief justice, Mian Saqib Nisar, directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold an election to these two Senate seats afresh. It held that both leaders had possessed foreign nationalities at the time of their submission of nomination papers for the Senate election, earlier this year.
