Overcrowded classrooms have a negative impact on students’ learning

Author: Rukhsar Khalid

Balochistan contains a lot of educational institutions within its territory, which have overloaded classrooms. It ultimately becomes tough to teach students accordingly. The number of allocated teachers is fewer as well.

The overload classrooms, in general, make huge problems in the learning results of the students. The teachers teach in such classrooms where the students feel frustrated and face a lot of difficulties. Some difficulties are maintenance of discipline, lack of space, weak learning and help with instruction issues. So, learners get discouraged and have negative effects on their studies. Resulting in overloaded classrooms, it directly affects on the teaching and learning. According to fine 2013, the maximizing of classrooms put teachers in negative professional satisfaction.

On the other hand, it affects on students’ performance and consequences of result, it also affects the behaviour of the students and psychological problems increase due to workload. These all problems relate to management and policy implementation including lack of attention and support. The main objective of a teacher in the classroom is to properly conduct each student’s activities and to promote their skills and also give chances to students to know their capabilities and abilities at the higher levels. However, most classes have a large number of learners, teachers feel very difficult to increase their learning skills. Therefore, teachers mostly follow lecture method during teaching. It automatically leads the students to adopt plagiarism which ends up with their academic failure.

It is difficult to overcome the burdens of maximum class work for a teacher. It is not possible for a teacher to evaluate them at the same time. The Flanders (1970) said that the main role played in the classrooms is the teacher to communicate with the students and actively participate with students in different class activities.

The teacher plus students interaction provides an essential basic for effective classroom management and is the key to high success. Lima 2003 mentioned that one of the factors that influence education at large classes which compels them to participate in the general classes rather than taking part in 33 individual learner. Nababago 2006 emphasizes that we teachers study at large classes. The teachers provide less practice. Because overcrowded classrooms affect students’ learning a lot.

Some tips I would suggest for the well development of the schools in Balochistan are:

Number of students in per class should be limited to 40 to 50.

Teachers need more training sessions with multiple tactics of adjustment of the students.

Teachers have to use different teaching methods in particular interactive methods so that students may become creative and independent thinkers.

Teachers should provide valid information to the students that give benefits to students for long time.

A careful look over these points and implementation of the well required steps can better change the education system in the province as it is now to what it should have been then. We need to provide a better education to the children as they are the coming stars and maintainers of the nation in the near future.
