NAB and White Collar Crimes

Author: Daily Times

Sir: The lack of conviction success by NAB in cases considered to be white collar crimes reflects on lack of capacity and competence of investigators and those selected by them to prosecute suspected criminals in courts of law. It takes more than strong arm tactics resorting to threats and torture to punish those involved in white collar crimes.

What NAB requires, are experts qualified from universities of repute not degree holders from controversial universities of ill-repute, which were denied recognition by our own HEC for decades. One such example is the Masters in IT degree of a provincial head of NAB, who was retired from sarkari job because he was considered unsuitable for further promotion in his parent organization. Even civilian recruits in NAB are of mediocre caliber, most of them politically appointed and lacking competence required in the complicated and sophisticated task of forensic investigation to tackle menace of corruption and white collar crimes.

Pakistan faces threat of sanctions by FATF because state institutions and financial regulatory agencies are dominated by mediocrity and civil bureaucrats incapable to curb this menace which threatens our economy and thereby our national security which is linked with it. Those at helm of such agencies often have conflicts of interest, since most of them own assets abroad, which they cannot justify by their declared sources of income.
