Sir: Russia suspended its participation in a Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty — a treaty signed by former US President Ronald Reagan and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev which banned ground-launched cruise missiles with a range between 500 km and 5,500 km — in a quid pro quo respond of US withdrawal of it earlier. The Russian move came a day after the US announced it was suspending compliance with the INF Treaty and gave notice to its intention to withdraw from the pact within six months over alleged Russian violations, thereby pledging to develop its own military response. Whereas, Russian President instructed its military to work on developing new land-based weapons that were previously banned by the pact. Meanwhile, the breach of this treaty has raised fears of a potential new arms race and less security that can lead the world towards a nuclear Armageddon. Instead of scrapping the extraordinarily successful arms control INF treaty, Moscow and Washington should engage in a bilateral constructive dialogue. Also, the Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation and all nuclear powers of World should strive to create a milieu of mutual understanding and reconciliation to stop the jeopardy of arms competition in order to save our planet of any catastrophe.
