Anti-polio campaign in Khyber postponed

KHYBER AGENCY: Polio drops were administered to some of children at a few spots and the anti-polio campaign was postponed to next week, official sources said on Sunday.

Agency Surgeon Dr. Niaz, while sharing the details said that like in other parts of the country, the drive was scheduled on Jan 15 however on the directions of the health directorate FATA officials; it was delayed till the coming week. He further said that all preparations had been finalised to carry out the campaign.

The local sources informed that the health officials launched a partial drive as a testing case due to the dying of six children in the previous campaign in Khyber Agency on which the parents expressed their reservations over the polio feeding.

According to an official of the Emergency Operation Centre, FATA in the ongoing week mobilisation would be made and from next week a full-fledged anti-polio drive would be initiated. He further said that for the first time ambulance service had been provided during the campaign to provide timely treatment to a child in time of need.

On a query he added that meetings had commenced with refusal of parents of children who had died during the last anti-polio drive and they would be convinced to administer it to their children.

It is to be mentioned here that six children died mysteriously in tehsils Bara and Landi Kotal during the last polio campaign that created a panic among the tribesmen of Khyber Agency.
