Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) in collaboration with the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise screened a sports comedy film titled ‘Comme des Garcons’ (Let the Girls Play). The impressive production values, crisp camerawork, enjoyable script and comic acts turned the movie a good starter for 2019, which has been now for almost three weeks. The movie shows the time of late 1960s, in which the writer of the movie director Julien Hallard takes the viewers to a newspaper office, a playboy sports reporter, a stubborn boss and charming girls. The reporter writes on what pleases him in sports activities. The stubborn boss forces him to plan a programme for the newspaper’s yearly celebration together with a charming assistant. What more would one want? This takes us to the bright but a bit crazy idea of a women’s football team. Women were playing football all over Europe and elsewhere in the late ’60s and it was not a big deal for women to play football in France during that time which also includes the early ’70s. However, things would not stop just at playing the game. The film takes viewers miles ahead to the official national recognition of the team. It is the struggle of the characters to make sure that football for women becomes nationally legal. Published in Daily Times, January 20th 2019.
