ISLAMABAD: Rejecting the ongoing accountability process, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Sherry Rehman on Monday said that investigation was carried out only against opposition parties, which was unacceptable and against the democratic values. During a Senate’s session, the PPP leader on a point of order claimed that only opposition parties were being held accountable in the country. A person who violated the constitution was given immunity and he was living abroad and regretted that local leader were involved in several fake cases. . Talking about the joint investigation team (JIT) probing the money laundering case against former president Asif Ali Zardari, she said that the JIT members’ meetings with ministers had made the investigations controversial. Sherry further said that FIA DG’s brother had contested election against the PPP and expressed concerns over the investigations launched by the JIT. She said that a joke was being carried out in the name of accountability in the country. The PPP leader maintained that Asif Ali Zardari had been imprisoned for 12 years but nothing could be proved against him. She said that the JIT was trying to make Asif Ali Zardari controversial. “The government is continuing political victimization,” she said, adding that the accountability should be across the board and transparent. Responding to Sherry Rehman’s statement, Leader of the House Shibli Faraz said PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif during his own government offered himself for accountability after Panama leaks. “Even the party leader distributed sweets when the Supreme Court of Pakistan made Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in Panama cases. When the SC disqualified Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N remained in government for one year but the investigations were continued in SC,” he maintained. He clarified that PTI has nothing to do with the cases because it was made before the formation of incumbent government. He said that some of the PTI leaders were also facing inquiries. He said that the NAB chairman was appointed with the consent of PML-N and PPP and the PTI has no relation with it. However, he said that the PTI government distanced itself from accountability process and let the investigative agencies to perform their duties. Faraz also said that Omni group cases were also not made during the PTI government. He advised all opposition parties to support the accountability process and put the country on the path of development and prosperity. Rejecting the arguments forwarded by the leader of the House, the PPP leader Sherry Rehman led a walkout from the House. At the same time, PPP Saussi Palijo pointed out the lack of quorum after which the Senate chairman prorogued the session. Published in Daily Times, December 25th 2018.
