Compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in Karachi opened after 24 hours on Tuesday. CNG stations in the metropolis were closed at 8 am on Monday. Earlier, CNG stations across the province remained shut for six days during which commuters faced problems due to a city-wide public transport paralysis. The CNG stations reopened on Saturday, after a six-day long hiatus after the government announced that they had restored the city’s gas supply. Earlier on December 11, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) had announced that it was discontinuing gas supply to CNG stations and captive power plants of all industrial units. SSGC stated that it was facing an acute gas shortage and low pressure in the system . On December 13, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan ordered that boards of directors (BoDs) of the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and SSGCL be dissolved on account of the current downfall. A day after ordering a fact-finding committee to launch an inquiry against the managing directors of both SNGPL and SSGCL, the federal government reshuffled the company’s board of directors over ‘poor performance.’ Published in Daily Times, December 19th 2018.
