Lady Gaga (“A Star is Born”) continues to lead the race for Best Film Drama Actress at the Golden Globes but Glenn Close (“The Wife”) is primed to pull off an upset. That’s according to four of the savviest people making Globe predictions at Gold Derby. They number in the top two dozen when it comes to their previous success rate at foreseeing the winners of these awards bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. Their support gives Close odds of 19/5 to win on Jan. 6 while Lady Gaga is out front with odds of 31/10. The other three nominees – Nicole Kidman(“Destroyer”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Rosamund Pike (“A Private War”) — are all far back with odds of 9/2 to pull off an upset. Close is the lone acting nominee from her film as are Kidman and Pike. McCarthy’s co-star, Richard E. Grant, contends in the catch-all supporting actor category, where he is locked in a fight with Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) for first place. “A Star is Born” is also in the running for Best Film Drama, while Lady Gaga’s leading man, Bradley Cooper, is up for Best Drama Actor as well as for his helming. While he was snubbed for his screenwriting, she reaped a bid for penning their duet, “Shallow.” Published in Daily Times, December 17th2018.
