Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre’s Radiology Department is now one of the most advanced in Pakistan after the inclusion of 3T MRI – Siemens Vida Bio-Matrix System and Digital Mammography with Tomosynthesisto. Shaukat Khanum’s Radiology Department Head Dr Imran Ahmed Niazi said that the department plays a central role in diagnosis, the very basic and imperative phase of cancer treatment. Considering the definite importance of radiology, Shaukat Khanum has continually introduced latest state-of-the-art medical technology in its Radiology department since its inception. The hospital is the first site in South Asia, the Middle East or the Far East to install this technology, which is capable of delivering immaculate resolution with very short scan times. The bio-matrix system is specifically designed to actively adjust scan settings to patient body size and shape during Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination, resulting in added image quality. A wide-bore magnet tunnel and essentially silent scanning further enhances the patient experience during imaging, as in previous model, the patients had to hold breathe for 15 to 20 seconds for best possible results. This new technology is capable of delivering more accurate results, while allowing the patient free breathing. This 3-T MRI also provides very advanced brain imaging, he added. He said that the second noteworthy addition in radiology has special significant in treatment of breast cancer, which is one of the most occurring cancers in Pakistan. Digital mammography with tomosynthesis is yet another addition to the state-of-the-art technology at Lahore facility. Digital mammography with tomosynthesis is a means of three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the breast using X-rays and is the first breast imaging system of its kind in Pakistan, with reduced radiation dose for patient safety. Unlike the regular mammography, tomosynthesis records four to five images and produces the combine final image with better results. This 3D imaging ensures reliable results in screening of breast cancer and differentiation of benign from malignant breast conditions. Shaukat Khanum Hospital offer the most comprehensive breast diagnostic facilities in Pakistan and the addition of this new system ensures that the hospital maintain its position as the leader in breast imaging, diagnosis and treatment. Dr Imran Hamed Niazi said that the department of radiology at the hospital is a leading department in liver and prostate cancer screening and after the inclusion of 3T MRI – Siemens Vida Bio-Matrix System and digital mammography with tomosynthesis to its technology, the capacity of Radiology Department has been increased by almost 50 percent. More needy and deserving cancer patients will now be able to get themselves treated with the latest state-of-the-art technology at Shaukat Khanum. Published in Daily Times, December 7th 2018.
