KARACHI: The judicial commission has summoned reports from the Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB) and district municipal corporations on the disposal of solid waste in the metropolis. Headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro the commission of inquiry into the state’s failure to provide safe drinking water and sanitation facilities issued notices to the local government secretary, and municipal commissioners of Karachi, Central, West, Korangi, and Malir to submit their reports on Jan 26. SWMB’s managing director Dr AD Sanjani informed the commission that the board has been tasked to handle the solid waste of only two districts – East and South. However, the DMCs were responsible for collection of waste in the remaining districts. Badar Jamil Mendro, the metropolitan commissioner, Karachi sought time to submit a comprehensive report with regard to maintenance of drains falling within the domain of KMC. Meanwhile, additional chief executive officer, Karachi Cantonment Board filed a statement, submitting that the cantonment board does not approve any building plan for construction of high-rise or multi-storey buildings unless the developer/builder submits NOC from the KWSB to ensure provision of potable water and proper handling of solid and liquid waste. He said that the practice was going on since long and undertook to submit the copies of those NOCs issued by KWSB. However, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board’s managing director contradicted his statement, saying no such procedure was being adopted by the cantonment boards. The representatives from Clifton, Faisal, Malir, Korangi Creek, Manora boards and DHA sought time to submit their respective reports detailing the procedure adopted by their boards before approving a plan for construction high-rises and multi-storey buildings.
