The Foreign Office (FO), on Monday, dismissed reports that a Pakistani student was killed in China. The FO in a released statement clarified that Usama Ahmad Khan, a student of Shenyang Jianzhu University, had committed suicide and was not killed. A video making rounds on social media platforms showed a man alleged to be Usama being beaten by three people and a Chinese woman weeping over his body. However, FO spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal claimed that the student had committed suicide and was not beaten to death in China. “The video being circulated on social media is fake and is not that of Usama Ahmad Khan,” said the spokesman. “We request all to help us in exercising caution in such matters, avoiding sensationalism and stopping spreading of ‘fake news’,” he added. The FO spokesperson further mentioned that upon receiving information, the ambassador of Pakistan to China deputed an officer of the embassy to visit Shenyang. “In Shenyang, he met students and faculty of the university, as well as, the police authorities. Throughout this process, he remained in close contact with the family of the deceased and got full support of Chinese authorities,” he said. According to FO spokesman, Usama’s body would be transported to Pakistan on Monday night. “The body was transported from Liaoning province to Beijing in the morning of November 17, the FO spokesperson said. “In close coordination with the family, the Mission will send the body to Pakistan. All arrangements are now in place for transportation of the body to Pakistan tonight,” read the statement. Published in Daily Times, November 20th 2018.
