Federal Minister for Education & Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood on Saturday said that the government was working on a plan regarding adaptive reuse of some of the heritage buildings. He stated this while addressing a function of Visegrad 4 Architectural Foundation + Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) Roundtable on Heritage-Conservation Old Towns & Cities at the National College of Arts. He said that efforts were being made to carry out audit of each and every heritage besides making its catalogue. Once audit of built heritage was done, it would be easy to determine that in which areas talent could be utilized to preserve the heritage, he said. The minister said, “On behalf of the people of Lahore, I welcome all the delegates and added that we have heritage of ancient Indus Valley civilisation like Mohenjo-daro and Harappan civilization.” He said that many areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern areas represent Buddhist Gandhara civilisation. Shafqat Mahmood said, “Lahore city is reflective of heritage and it has some colonial built heritage as well. We have challenges but heritage needs to be conserved.” The minister said it has been decided to open heritage for people besides generating revenue through it, he added. One can see that a large number of people visited governor houses when they were opened for public. He said Lahore Governor’s House would be transformed in such a way that guided tours could be made possible there. Earlier, Yousuf Ghauri said, “It is a third heritage conference and Lahore is a perfect place to hold heritage conferences.” Published in Daily Times, October 28th 2018.
