Mutual solidarity and unity among media organizations is essential for stability of media freedom and therefore preparation of a consensual, multidimensional and modern code of conduct for all media houses, institutions, journalists and other media workers is the requirement of the day, said IBA Centre of Excellence in Journalism Director Kamal Siddiqui on Tuesday.
He was speaking at a ceremony organized by Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors at CPNE Secretariat. The event was held for CPNE members as part of the process for preparing a unified code of conduct for the media. Siddiqi said that under the aegis of CPNE, the development of a code of conduct with the cooperation of media experts was a significant development. He said that the development and voluntary implementation of a consensual, diverse and modern code of conduct for media and journalists would not only promote responsible journalism but would also increase trust of people and political institutions in the media. Addressing the ceremony, CPNE Secretary General Dr Jabbar Khattak said that under the aegis of the the council a group of media experts had been engaged in research for two years to evolve a unified code of conduct.
