The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday, offered technical support to Punjab Health Department for development of Human Resources for Health (HRH) and an expert of international repute Dr Mario Roberto Dal Paz would be assigned the task to establish HRH Observatory for Punjab. Dr Mario Roberto Dal Paz would also help in finalising the HRH profiling besides recommendations for provincial HRH strategic framework. This was discussed in a key meeting of WHO delegation with Punjab Minister for Health Dr Yasmin Rashid. Dr Jamshed Ahmed was leading the delegation while Dr Roberto Dal Paz and Punjab Public Health Agency (PPHA) Chief Executive Officer Dr Shabnam Sarfaraz were also present during the meeting. “Achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) was a key priority identified by Punjab’s new government,” said the minister. She was presented with the Punjab health workforce strategy draft after being technically vetted by Dr Dal Paz, an internationally renowned expert on health workforce planning. Dr Yasmin Rashid thanked Dr Paz for his technical support to the PPHA team towards finalisation of the health workforce strategy documents for Punjab. She informed that the government of Punjab was focusing on engaging with the general physicians and was improving preventive and primary healthcare for achieving UHC. Maternal and neonatal child health as well as family planning and nutrition will be amongst the top priority agenda. She reiterated the government’s commitment towards addressing health workforce deficits in the province. Dr Rashid acknowledged Dr Paz and WHO for their technical assistance towards a scientific review of the drafts for the finalisation. She said that Punjab stands committed to handhold the other provinces for formulation of their health strategy. Punjab being the trail blazer will be sharing its learning and experiences with other provinces and shall be guiding them through development of their health workforce strategies, she added.
