LAHORE: Senior Minister and Minister for Local Government and Community Development Department, Punjab, Abdul Aleem Khan visited the Urban Unit on Thursday and held a meeting regarding the waste management operations. The meeting was held in continuation to a consultative session held some two weeks ago in senior minister’s office where the Urban Unit presented him plans for waste management operations of the cities. The minister was briefed on the suggestions and recommendations of the Unit to make Prime Minister Imran Khan’s 100 Days plan a real success. Acting CEO Urban Unit Salman Hashmi and acting COO Urban Unit Abid Hussaini briefed the minister about various projects and initiatives undertaken by the Urban Unit. Renowned economist and consultant for Urban Unit, Dr Salman Shah, also presented on Punjab Spatial Strategy during the meeting.The Minister has directed the Urban Unit to prepare monitoring dashboard for Clean and Green Punjab Program and share recommendations about 23 landfill site options in the entire Punjab. He further directed the Solid Waste Management (SWM) team at the Unit to give complete revenue generation plan for various waste management companies across Punjab so that the SWM systems can be made sustainable without further burdening the government. Discussing the transportation issues in the city, Aleem Khan has asked the Urban Unit to present a well thought out design of commercialization of Orange Line Metro Train stations for project sustainability as well as revenue generation and attraction of commuters. The Urban Unit will also design and prepare the real-time monitoring dashboard for Clean and Green Punjab Programme along with providing third party validation services for the same. The minister has also asked the Unit to include Dera Ghazi Khan as the key city in World Bank funded Punjab Intermediate Cities Improvement Investment Programme and to ensure all reforms in making the selected cities model and smart cities in true sense of the word. He suggested that the Unit should further lead the programme and complete its rest of phases for making cities more resilient, citizens’ friendly and economically viable.On the directives of Senior Minister Aleem Khan, the Unit will also present on WASAs’ pilot project of complete monitoring systems in all the cities of Punjab. The Urban Unit has been directed to present all work within a week so that the approved suggestions can be merged with PM’s 100 Days Plan. The minister expressed his satisfaction on the capacity of Urban Unit and has assured the urban Unit team of his complete support and patronage for playing a crucial part in making government’s development agenda successful.
