ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday ordered to form a committee to investigate alleged corruption in Thar coal power project. Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar heard the suo motu case related to the corruption in Thar coal power project. The chairman of Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) project in Thar, Dr Samar Mubarakmand told the court that they have set-up a 100MW plant at a cost of Rs8.8 billion under a Sindh government’s project and they received funding of Rs900 million in 2012 and by 2014-15 the plant was generating 8MW. The court asked that why is only 8MW of power being generated from a project which has cost Rs3.4 billion. Read more: SC seeks policy to tackle drought in Thar The additional attorney general responded to the court’s question by saying that one project will generate about 1,320MW of electricity and its cost $1.9 billion, adding that the other three projects of 300MW each are near completion at a cost of $1.77 billion. Moreover, the additional attorney general added that two plants are currently operating on imported coal and generating generating 1,320MW of electricity have been set-up at Port Qasim and Sahiwal. The court then ordered to form a committee to investigate about the alleged corruption in the Thar coal project.
